  History

In 1828 Robert Evans bought 140 acres of land and built two log cabins, one where Monroe Federal is today and the other is now the Methodist Church Parking Lot.  In 1831 he sold land to Henry Hyatt who started the town of Hyattsville.  New settlers, Jacob & Jane Crisman purchased land on June 4, 1831 and deeded the seventy square rods of land to the Trustees of the Hyattsville Methodist Episcopal Church under the Rev. James McPherson's leadership. The congregation was organized as part of the Miami Circuit, which began in Dayton and followed the Miami River to some point deep in the frontier north of Findlay.

The first church was built of logs on what is now North Hyatt Street and served them well until 1840 when it was torn down and replaced with a brick structure, (many believe the home at 215 North Hyatt St. is the brick church building used from 1840-1860).

In 1840, John H. Clark laid out the land for Tippecanoe City around the Miami-Erie Canal.  At the announcement of a railway line, the town moved quickly to develop a western addition.  In 1853, the Methodist Episcopal Church purchased two lots in the Western Addition as a future site for a church.  In 1860, the congregation awarded a contract to build a brick church at the corner of Third and Dow Streets, where it sits today.  The original structure, completed in 1863 (delayed by the Civil War), had a colonial, domed spire and a steeple atop the main building. 1
In May 1895, the membership voted to create church school rooms in a small addition to be added to the rear of the 1860 structure.  The plan called for major improvements to the main structure with the addition of double towers on Third Street, increased pitch in the roof, and the four classrooms.  The remodeled structure was dedicated in 1896.  In 1902, the church’s first electric lights were installed.  The organ alcove was added in 1906.
In 1955, ground was broken for a new education addition.  The sanctuary was remodeled starting in late 1957 and completed in the English Tudor style early in 1960.  In 1968 the name of the church changed from Methodist Episcopal Church to Tipp City United Methodist Church due to the merger between the E.U.B. & Methodist churches.  In June 1983, additional property was purchased to develop off-street parking at the corner of Third & Main Streets. 1
1 In 1995, a house and lot to the west of the existing church was purchased.  Construction began in 1998 on an expansion to house what is now the Great Hall, Kitchen, Gathering Area, more Sunday School rooms, centralized offices and new restrooms.  Dedication of the new space was held in June 1999
Currently, in 2009, the church supports many ministries in the renovated space including: UPWARD Sports, Community Dinners, Preschool and Mega-Events like the Power Team. 1
